“The purpose of this project is to bring awareness to the reading of the Bible. As the people of the Book, the Greater New York Conference is being called to Read the Bible, Follow the Bible, and Practice the Bible, it’s my dream to see kids, youth, young adults, and everyone in Greater New York reading the entire Bible in 2009 and beyond in the years to come. We are not the people of traditions; we must truly be the people of the Book.” For more info, please go to our website: http://gnycyouth.com/article/articleview/791/1/138#. 5. Campmeetings (English, Spanish, & Franco-Haitian): Campmeeting Season is here once again. Three of our Campmeetings will take place on the following dates:
English Campmeeting
June 27, 2009: Special program for Youth, Young Adults, College, University Students. Youth Choirs Extravaganza, & Bible Bowl Finals
July 4, 2009: Special Emphasis for Pathfinders, Adventurers, & Master Guides. Our special guest for this day is Pastor Jonatan Tejel, World Pathfinder Director for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Since we could not hold the Camporees this year due to H1N1, and many of our Pathfinders, Adventurers, & Master Guides were left wanting a Camporee, we will dedicate this special day to them. Clubs make plans to attend, in full class A Uniform in the morning.
We are planning a wonderful and very big baptism on July 4. Youth, Young Adults, Pathfinders, and Adventurers will be baptized at the pool on this day. Please, make plans with your clubs to be present for this awesome experience.
Spanish Campmeeting (for the entire week of July 11 to July 18)
An entire week filled with lots of Spiritual Programming, friends, nature, and recreation. Info will be posted shortly.
Franco-Haitian Campmeeting (for the entire week of July 19 to July 25)
An entire week filled with lots of Spiritual Programming, friends, nature, and recreation. Info will be posted shortly.
6. Mission Trips: For this year we planned several mission trips. One of them, the Mission Trip to Jamaica, has already taken place successfully. There are two more trips on the schedule for the summer.
Mission Trip to Dominican Republic (July 23-31, 2009)
Many have already registered for this trip. If you, your youth group, or anyone you know is planning to go on this trip, please call our office and register immediately. For more information on this trip, please click the following link: http://gnycyouth.com/article/articleview/795/1/138.
Trip to Mexico (August 18-27, 2009)
This trip is cancelled due to the H1N1 virus and the recent increase of violence in Mexico. Our Department takes the safety of our youth, young adults, and adults very seriously. We will comply with the recommendations not to travel during this summer. We are asking all Missionaries registered for this trip to make arrangements with our office in order to be included in the Mission Trip to Dominican Republic or receive a refund of registration fees already paid. It always hurts to cancel a ministry opportunity which can be a tremendous blessing to many; yet the protection & safety of our people are of paramount importance and we will not take this responsibility lightly.
7. Pastor Jose’s Report & Schedule: The last few weeks have been very busy weeks; here I will include a brief report of our Department and some of the upcoming schedule.
III Teens Awareness Weekend
Well attended by many teens. Special thanks to the Physicians and Professionals led by Dr. Herbert Goulding who gave of their time and knowledge to help our teens. I am also, very grateful to parents and chaperones who took time of their busy schedules to make a difference in the lives of our kids. My colleague, Pastor Ruben Merino, Director of Community Services & Health, was there with his team to support this vital event. Our family took a little break from this event and traveled to Poughkeepsie where, we preached the worship service sermon, for an Evangelism Rally for all the Hispanic Churches in Upstate New York. The Pastors in Upstate New York did a wonderful job putting this event together; over 800 people were in attendance.
Collegiate Summit
The Collegiate Summit took place on the same weekend, as the Teens Awareness. Since, I have not been able to reach omnipresence yet; I was not able to visit this event. Alex Espana, GNYC Collegiate Coordinator, did a great job together with the Columbia University Adventist Christian Fellowship and the Church of the Advent Hope. Our gratitude to Pastors Tony Romeo and Todd Stout.
10th Wedding Anniversary for Joanne & me
Knowing that our anniversary always falls during Camporee, May 23. Joanne and I decided to take a few days off in April to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. The four of us had a wonderful trip, a romantic anniversary of four on the Riviera Maya in Mexico. After 10 years, Joanne deserves much more, I should’ve taken her to the moon; when I called it was not available. We went to Mexico and right then, the Swine Flu hit. Happy to report we all made it back safely. Had a wonderful time. We took some pictures, which you can see on our Facebook.
Mothers’ Day Sabbath @ Huntington
The Men’s Ministry of the Huntington Church, invited us to speak on Mother’s Day Sabbath. The church was packed, I love the way Pastor Lincoln Smith leads this congregation, he also asked me to use the robe to preach and I did. He has some great elders; a few of them are young adults. Brother Willis and Sister Charlotte made sure I had plenty of sorrel, when I finished my sermon, of course, a great meal to go with it.
Taping of Youth TV Program with Esperanza TV @ our New TV Studio in Queens
The Greater New York Conference has a beautiful brand new TV studio, built by Pastor Ruben Merino and his staff at the Community Service Center in Queens. We had the privilege of using it for the first time, as we recorded 18 Youth TV Program for Esperanza TV (the official channel of our church in Spanish). The program is called Conexion Joven (Youth Conection), a talk-show format with a live audience and two hosts, Rafael Vargas and Sunilbe Rosario. Scores of youth and young adults participated in the live audience during the taping. We also had experts for each subject we dealt with. Hope TV has already contacted us; they would like to do the same in English during the fall. The 30 minute program is the first youth program to be air on Esperanza TV, beginning in September.
Jackson Heights 50th Anniversary
On May 16, had the privilege of participating on the 50th Anniversary of the Jackson Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church, a beautiful program, with many of the former pastors, and founding members. Church was packed. Maria Barreto did a wonderful job, organizing the whole event. Pastors John Piroski and Bledi Leno were excellent hosts. There was a beautiful slide show, beginning 50 years ago, and my highlight of the day, was the Jackson Heights Choir, loved it.
Upstate New York Youth Evangelism Week
On that very same day, had the privilege of visiting the Upstate New York Week of Youth Evangelism, taking place at the Mamaroneck Seventh-day Adventist Church. Teddy Williamson, Helmer & Alexandra Saravia are great Adventist Youth Coordinators and awesome leaders, Upstate New York Youth are doing well. Jonas Apau and Barbara Hyde also supported this special week of evangelism, which ended up with a baptismal ceremony. Special thanks to Pastor Neylon Samuel and the Mamaroneck/Living Waters District for hosting the Area Youth Evangelism 2009. The speaker Daniel Kelly did a wonderful job, he can preach. If you need a guest preacher in your church, definitely would recommend him.
Adventist Youth Work Day @ Camp Berkshire
Over 150 youth, young adults, adults went to Camp Berkshire for this special day. There under the leadership of the Hector Perez, Camp Staff, and Pathfinder Coordinator Angel Reyes, they were able to work hard for the entire day, to improve our camp. Special thanks to Pastor Jose Carpio who took with him 66 people from the Washington Ave and Fordham Churches. Walter Harris & Esteban Rosario also had the members of the AYES Corps there. The following churches were also there through their youth to work on this day: Shalom, Spanish University, Co-op City, Spanish Weeks, South Bronx, Old Westbury, Spanish Convent, Spanish Manhattan, Macedonia with Pastor Kevin Brown, Spanish Yonkers, Spanish Intervale, and Spanish Parkchester. On behalf of our Department and Camp Berkshire, I would like to say thanks for great work.
Camp Berkshire Master Plan Approved
We have been working very hard for a little over a year to have a Master Plan for Camp Berkshire. Just last Sunday, the Master Plan for Camp Berkshire was approved by our Conference. Now, we have an idea of what we would like our Camp to look like, and the services which we would like the Camp to offer. Our Team, took very seriously your responses to the surveys and questionnaires, we looked at every single one of them. In a few days you will receive a complete update on Camp Berkshire, the Master Plan, and the present upgrades. The vote took place on Sunday, on Monday we went to the Camp, met with several people in the Town of Dover, and began some of the application process.
Weekend Schedule
Tomorrow, I will be speaking at the Brooklyn School Baccalaureate. On Sunday will be speaking at the Whispering Pines Graduation. In the afternoon will be meeting with AY and Pathfinder Coordinators.
Many Blessings!!!
