Adventist Youth, Pathfinders, Adventurers & Master Guides for HAITI

Greater New York Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
Department of Adventist Youth Ministries
Adventist Youth, Pathfinders, Adventurers & Master Guides for HAITI
1/27/10

In the aftermath of the fatal Haiti earthquake, the Department of Adventist Youth Ministries has continue to support the work our Conference is doing on behalf of those suffering there and mourning here. We have been working very closely on a support role with our Adventist Community Services Department. Right now, we have three Conference Youth Leaders in the ground in Haiti, Walter Harris (Team Leader, AYES Corps Coordinator, & AY Coordinator), Esther Reme (AYES Corps & AY Coordinator), and Jean Joseph Lapierre (Pathfinder Coordinator). AYES Corps has also been visiting the churches and assisting at the Command Center set up by Adventist Community Services in Brooklyn. Another one of our AY Coordinators and AYES Corps, Kelvin Rivas, will be headed to Haiti tomorrow, to take charge of our team there, replacing Walter Harris.

We have met with the different Adventist Youth Ministries Leadership Advisories of our Conference and have decided on the following initiatives to continue to support the work of our Conference on behalf of Haiti:

1. Pathfinders, Adventurers, & Master Guides for HAITI: We would like to strongly encourage each local Pathfinder, Adventurer Club, and the Master Guides of each church to participate in a fundraising effort, Ingathering-like in the church’s community and neighborhood. A card has been created with info on Haiti, Purpose of the Fundraising, as well as info on Adventurers, Pathfinders, and Master Guides. We have printed 10,000 of them and are in the process of mailing them out to you, so each club and Master Guides can use them in the fundraising. In order to be more effective in this project, we are asking the clubs and leaders to go out in Full Class A Uniform. People in the community are looking at different ways to donate and will be more than glad to contribute with this campaign. They will also get to know Adventurers, Pathfinders, master Guides, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a result of this Missionary Project on behalf of Haiti.

The process to follow is the following: Deposit the collected donations in your church, keep track of the amount you’ve deposited, prior to February 14, request a check for the amount deposited from your church’s treasurer. On February 14, during our Pathfinder, Adventurer, & Master Guide Recognition Day we will have a Roll Call, When the name of the Club is called the Club Director and a Pathfinder/Adventurer will come forward with the check and the amount fundraised will be announced. All the clubs which participate will be given an extra 500 points. The Top Three Pathfinder Clubs & Adventurer Clubs (per capita) will be recognized and given a Bonus of another 500. The club will be recognized for the amount of the money in the check. The minimal goal we are suggesting is $10.00 per Adventurer, $10.00 per Pathfinder, and $20.00 per Master Guide.

It must be clear; we are requesting this Fundraising to take place outside of the church’s walls, in the community. This way the three-fold objective will be met: (1) Collect Money from the Community for Haiti Relief, (2) teach our kids to work on behalf of the needy, and (3) expose the community to our wonderful programs for kids and adults (Adventurer, Pathfinder, & Master Guide Ministries).

The Fundraising Cards will be coming to you this week; if your clubs wants to start right away you can download the Fundraising Card right here in our website, www.gnycyouth.com.

2. All Adventist Youth & Young Adults of 2010 will be going to Haiti: Our Department plans and organizes 2 to 3 Mission Trips every year with about 100 missionaries going each year. For this year we had planned 3 trips (Jamaica, Dominican, Haiti). We have decided to re-route all 3 trips to Haiti. These trips will be done in combination with Adventist Community Services and may change in format. Rather than taking trips with large groups, we may begin to do small groups on a biweekly basis. If you would like to go in the near future, please E-mail me pastorjose@gnycyouth.comor Pastor Ruben Merino acsnydirector@hotmail.com.

3. Encouraging the Work of the Haiti Union with Maranatha: When we came back from our trip to Haiti in 2009, prior to this year’s earthquake, we contacted Maranatha and requested their help to build new church buildings in Haiti. The leadership of Maranatha said they would be willing to work with Haiti but they would need a direct request from the Haitian Union. At that time we contacted the Haitian Union and asked them to send the request to Maranatha, yet up to this date, the request has not been sent. During our trips we will be working with the Haitian Union to make sure the request now comes loud and clear to Maranatha International.
