Update from GNYC Relief Team in Haiti 1/29/10

Kelvin Rivas
Haiti Relief Coordinator
Team 2

Friday, 1/29/10
We woke up quite early to leave Santo Domingo for the border. We crossed the border into Haiti at 8:50am and it took us over 5 hours to make it to Port du Prince as traffic is heavy entering the city. We arrived at the SDA University in Haiti and met with Walter and the team of doctors and nurses. Walter seemed relieved and happy to see us. The University is full of people in need of food and shelters. It’s incredible what we found there. We headed back to Auberge Du Quebec, the hotel where the team has been staying. We split in two groups. The doctors and nurses set out for a tour of the city as they have been so busy they have not had the chance to see the city and the destruction. A separate group including Walter, Pr. Barthelemy and myself headed out to visit some of the shelters Walter’s team has been working with. We only got the chance to visit two shelters, but the need is great. Some people still have not eaten a solid meal. We handed out tarps at the first shelter for families and provided a very large tarp that can cover a wide area for the survivors. In a short time, we were surrounded by 15 – 25 people as they wanted to have a tarp as well. Unfortunately, we don’t have the means to get every family a tarp, but our efforts are being welcomed.
We left for another shelter and when we walked in I noticed about 60 people in the front yard of the church. No tarps or tents. We met with the director in charge of this site and provided him several tarps, including another large tarp to cover most of the yard. We felt extremely welcomed here. God is certainly making a difference here, but only with the help of our churches in NY.
