FYI from Pastor Jose Cortes Jr.
Director
February 23, 2010
Greetings!

Sunday, February 14, was a very special day for several reasons:

The Adventurers, Pathfinders, & Master Guides of Greater New York made history during their Recognition Day & Mission Project.  They got their parents and counselors to donate mane pints of blood to the New York City Blood Bank, gave out dozens of toys, blankets, care, food, & fruit packages to those in need in Brooklyn, visited police precincts, and brought in over 20,000.00 in donations they collected in the previous week and a half, and over 50 tents to support our Conference's Relief Effort in Haiti.  These are some of the things our kids can do and will do each time, they are given the mission and the means to fulfill it. I would like to thank each Adventurer, Pathfinder, Master Guide, Leader, and Parent who supported these missionary efforts.  On February 14, our kids ministered locally and internationally.

I would also like to thank AYES Corps (Adventist Youth Emergency Services Corps) for its ongoing ministry on behalf of the Haiti Relief effort.  Once again AYES Corps, in full uniform, was there ready to help with the collection of Funds and the program.

On that day, we also saw another mission team leave Greater New York bound for Haiti in support of our Conference's Relief efforts there. This team included Teddy Williamson (AY Coordinator & Volunteer Assistant to the Youth Director), Angel Reyes (Pathfinder Coordinator & Volunteer Assistant to the Youth Director), and Mel Francis (AY Coordinator & Leader @ North Bronx Adventist Church). Delor Laguerre (AY Coordinator) also left on this day, together with a group from the French Gethsemane Adventist Church.

On that very same Sunday we welcomed back Kelvin Rivas (AYES Corps/AY Coordinator) who had been in Haiti for two weeks, managing the UN Distribution Program, delivering over 14,000 tons of food to Port-Au-Prince and its vicinity. A few days later I was able to welcome back Pastor Reginald Barthelemy (Pastor of French Ephraim & French Canaan Adventist Churches) who also led in the Food Distribution Program of Port-Au-Prince.  These young men are Christian Heroes.  Pastor Ruben Merino, Adventist Community Services Director and also in charge of the GNYC Haiti Relief Operation, has reported the great work done by this team and the tremendous impact they've made with the local and worldwide authorities responding to those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.  Praise God for them.

Satan always tries to spoils the Hope, Happiness, & Health that we are proclaiming and practicing daily.  On Sunday, February 14, after the Recognition Ceremony and Mission Projects, Lisa Gonzalez (AYES Corps, Communication, Women's & Men's Ministries Secretary @ GNYC) had an accident. It was not her fault, yet she had to be taken to the hospital where she spent a couple of days before being released.  Lisa is feeling better. Please, keep her in your prayers.

Lots of Love & Blessings!!!

Give ONE HOUSE to ONE FAMILY in Haiti
HomesHaiti Give ONE HOUSE to ONE FAMILY in HAITI (Donate 1 TENT to a Family in Haiti): As our Adventist Youth Ministries Department continues to work hand in hand with the Adventist Community Services Department of our Conference we have a brand new initiative to maintain our support for those affected by the Port-Au-Prince earthquake. We are in constant communication with our team in Haiti.  Just a few hours ago, I communicated with Pastor Ruben Merino, Teddy Williamson, Angel Reyes, and Mel Francis; they were very clear and unrelenting in their requests for tents. Don't worry about some of the things you have heard and read.  Our people in Haiti need a place to live, a Shelter, they NEED TENTS.  Over 5,000 Adventist Families, a total of over 20,000 Adventist Members are homeless in Port-Au-Prince right now.

Please, make a special plea in your church for the next two weeks and ask each member and family, who is able to donate a tent to do so (preferably a 6-10 person tent in good shape and complete with all its stakes & parts).  Each tent donated will be shipped to Haiti and it will become the HOUSE of a FAMILY in Port-Au-Prince and its surroundings.  ONE TENT equals a HOUSE for a FAMILY in HAITI.

You can take the TENTS to the following locations by March 14 or before, please make arrangement before drop-off:

Adventist Community Service Headquarters (Queens) @ 41-26 58th Street Woodside, NY  11377
Greater New York Conference Office (Long Island) @ 7 Shelter Rock Rd., Manhasset, NY 11030
French Gethsemane Adventist Church (Brooklyn) @ 357 Empire Blvd. Brooklyn NY   11225-3203
Camp Berkshire (Upstate New York) @ 680 Berkshire Road. Wingdale, NY 12594

The Prospect Spanish and Broadway Spanish Adventist Churches have already committed to donating 100 tents to this effort.  Special thanks to Pastors Camilo de Leon and Camilo Carvajal for their leadership on this project.
Adventurer, Pathfinder & Master Guide for Haiti
haitiflagAdventurer, Pathfinder, & Master Guide for Haiti (Fundraising Continues till March 13): During our Recognition Day, it was mentioned that we would continue the Adventurer, Pathfinder, & Master Guide Fundraising for Haiti for a few more weeks.  We have ordered more Fundraising Cards and will make them accessible to you by the weeks' end or beginning of next week.

Remember, the purpose of this effort is not to collect money within the church, our church members have done a lot and we are grateful for their generosity. This Fundraising is mean to be carried out by Adventurers, Pathfinders, and Master Guides outside the Church. Clubs which have not submitted their fundraising, still have time to do it.  Other clubs which have already submitted their fundraising and would like to do more can still do so.  Our deadline for the funds is March 14.

Please, send or bring the checks to the Office of the Adventist Youth Ministries Department. 100% of the funds collected are going to Haiti together with the rest of the funds collected by the Greater New York Churches.

LOGOIndividuals & Clubs of the Year in Greater New York Conference: The following Clubs and Individuals were honored during the Adventurer, Pathfinder, & Master Guide Recognition Day, which took place on February 14, 2010 at the French Gethsemane Adventist Church in Brooklyn, NY.

The Adventurer, Pathfinder, & Master Guide of the Year 2009 were chosen by the Coordinators Advisory after a careful review of all Nomination Forms, properly submitted by the local clubs.  The Adventurer & Pathfinder Director of the Year were chosen by the Coordinators Advisory after careful examination of their work and club reporting.  The Adventurer and Pathfinder Clubs of the Year were not chosen, these were simply the clubs that got the highest amount of points as a direct result of working and reporting.

The Coordinator of the Year is chosen by the Director of Adventist Youth Ministries of the Conference.  It's always difficult for me to make this selection due to the extremely good Coordinators we have in our Conference, responsible for leading an outstanding program.
