International Mission Trips in 2010
|
For this year (2010), we had planned several international mission projects: Jamaica (March 7-13), Dominican Republic (August 3-9), and Haiti (August 10-18). After the earthquake in Haiti, we re-examined our International Mission Projects and realized that we should devote our time, funds, efforts, and energy to helping Haiti.
Given the situation in Haiti right now, the recommendation of our people on the ground there, and the guidelines of Risk Management, and of the North American Division, is that large mission trips with youth and young adults are not appropriate at this time and for a while in Haiti. Yet, recognizing the need and knowing that many of our young adults and adults are equipped for disaster relief and ministry there, our Department of Adventist Youth Ministries has partnered with Adventist Community Services here in Greater New York through AYES Corps (Adventist Youth Emergency Services Corps) to respond the catastrophe in Port-Au-Prince and its suburbs, Haiti.
This is why we have adapted our strategy to responding to Haiti. We are working very close with Adventist Community Services and Pastor Ruben Merino, who is the person in charge of the Haiti Relief Operation in Greater New York. Since January 17, a few days after the earthquake, we’ve had small mission teams go to Haiti for periods of 2 weeks; each team sent by our Conference to Haiti has included a majority of team members who are AYES Corps, AY Coordinators, Pathfinder Coordinators, and young adults, among others. Mission Trips have been scheduled and some have already taken place on the following dates.
Mission Trip #1: January 17-January 31
Mission Trip #2: January 28-February 14
Mission Trip #3: February 14-February 28
Mission Trip #4: February 28-March 14
Mission Trip #5: March 7-March 14 (Medical Team)
Mission Trip #6: March 14-28
Mission Trip #7: Another trip to distribute and set up tents in Haiti (dates to be announced)
